BOSTON - The Gerontology Department of Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center (BIDMC) has been renamed Senior Health at BIDMC to better reflect its focus on preventive medicine.

"Aging doesn't have to result in declining health," explains Suzanne Salamon, MD, associate director of Senior Health at BIDMC. "Our outpatient medical practice emphasizes health maintenance. We want to help older adults to remain independent and to better manage chronic medical conditions."

Senior Health at BIDMC is made up of a group of doctors and nurse practitioners specializing in geriatric medicine, all of whom hold appointments at Harvard Medical School. Offering the skills of a health care team knowledgeable in the special issues of aging, Senior Health at BIDMC not only works closely with patients but also works with their families and caregivers to coordinate the best possible care.

"Healthy individuals over age 65 can benefit from visiting Senior Health at BIDMC," adds Salamon. "Preventive steps can be taken while an older adult is still in good health to avoid many of the health problems that often affect people as they age."

In addition to practicing primary care, some of the specific issues that the providers of Senior Health routinely address are osteoporosis prevention and treatment; memory loss, including Alzheimer's disease; falls and fainting; incontinence; depression; confusion; pain management; nutrition advice; and medication management.

"Disability and decline are not inevitable consequences of aging," says Salamon. "The goal of the staff of Senior Health at BIDMC is to help everyone live a long and healthy life."
