BOSTON - CareGroup Healthcare System has been named one of the five best large health systems in the United States - and one of the 15 best health systems overall - in the fourth annual Thomson Reuters study of hospital performance at more than 300 health systems.
CareGroup is the only large health care system in New England to receive this award and one of only two systems nationally to win this award two years in a row.
The review was based on a composite score of eight measures of quality, patient rating of performance and efficiency at each of the individual CareGroup hospitals - Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital-Needham, New England Baptist Hospital and Mount Auburn Hospital. Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital-Milton recently joined the group and was not included in the analysis.
"This year we are seeing stronger system-wide performance and increased rates of improvement, particularly among the 15 Top Health Systems award winners," Jean Chenoweth, Thomson Reuters senior vice president for performance improvement and 100 Top Hospitals program.
"This survey reflects the strong performance of each of the individual hospitals in clinical quality and efficiency metrics, including lower rates of mortality, medical complications, and patient safety," said Robert Melzer, chairman of the CareGroup board.. "We are all proud of this performance because it reflects our common dedication to, and success with, providing high value care."
The study found the top health systems shared many of the same qualities, including: lower 30-day mortality rates; better survival rates; fewer complications; shorter hospital stays; and higher patient satisfaction.
The study used the 2010 Medicare Provider Analysis and Review (MedPAR) and the CMS Hospital Compare data sets to examine health systems with two or more short-term, general, non-federal hospitals; cardiac and orthopedic hospitals; and critical access hospitals.
CareGroup, Inc. is the parent holding company of Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital-Needham, Mount Auburn Hospital and New England Baptist Hospital, which operate on a decentralized basis while sharing a commitment to quality and patient safety.
