BIDMC is one of the first hospitals in the Northeast with a videophone system in a central, public lobby. </description>

      <description>Dr. Frank LoGerfo, a nationally known expert in vascular surgery and a director of the American Board of Surgery, has been named surgeon-in-chief and chairman of the department of surgery at the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center (BIDMC), effective immediately. He is the William V. McDermott professor of surgery at Harvard Medical School. LoGerfo, who since January 1999 has been the acting chair of BIDMC’s surgery department, has fulfilled his original vision of uniting a merged department, strengthening its relationship with the Joslin Diabetes Center, organizing the joint BIDMC/Joslin Foot Center, and re-establishing the institution’s liver program. As part of that most recent effort, he has recruited international leaders in liver disease treatment and transplantation. He is working with those physicians to create a nationally prominent multidisciplinary liver center, a program that provides comprehensive treatment for the disease. </description>
