History of Our Center
In 2003, BIDMC's Center for Minimally Invasive Surgery (MIS) Skills Lab was established to provide medical students and residents from BIDMC and Boston's other teaching hospitals the opportunity to gain proficiency in basic and advanced laparoscopic procedures, featuring a number of different and sophisticated educational tools including, realistic models, simulators, virtual reality, computer-based material and ultrasound technology, and touting the world's largest collection of filmed operations. As the most comprehensive facility of its kind in New England, the MIS Lab quickly gained local and national attention.
The rapid success of the MIS Lab led to the development of a strategic plan for education, and the expansion of the MIS Lab was one of its major recommendations. The expansion soon broadened into the creation of a comprehensive simulation and skills center that incorporated tools for healthcare students and professionals at all levels and across all specialties. The state-of-the-art Carl J. Shapiro Simulation and Skills Center opened in June 2006, under the direction of David Feinstein, MD, anesthesia and Daniel B. Jones, MD, FACS, minimally invasive surgery.
