Teaching Consultation

The Center for Education at BIDMC is pleased to announce the initiation of the Teaching Consultation Service. Consultations will be conducted by the BIDMC Resource Faculty, who have been drawn from each of our clinical departments and have undergone extensive training on the principles of adult learning, curriculum development, feedback and evaluation, and peer review of teaching.

Interested faculty members may request consultations on a range of topics including:

  • Curriculum development
  • Preparation of educational materials
  • Provision of feedback and evaluation to learners
  • Dealing with challenging interactions with learners
  • Teaching in lectures
  • Teaching in small group sessions
  • Teaching at the bedside
  • Teaching in the ambulatory setting

In addition, individuals may request Resource Faculty to observe a teaching session in order to provide formative feedback and/or a summative evaluation; the latter may be an important document for some individuals to include in their teaching portfolio to support their promotion on the teacher-clinician pathway. Our policy is to have two Resource Faculty conduct observations.

Videotape recording of teaching sessions is available and recommended to aid in the feedback process. In providing their services, the Resource Faculty have available the resources and expertise of the Office of Professional Development within the BIDMC Center for Education to draw upon should they be required.

Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center is the first academic medical center in the nation to implement a teaching consultation service. This program –funded jointly by the medical center, Harvard Medical School, and the Carl J. Shapiro Institute for Education and Research – is a reflection of the commitment of BIDMC to improving education for our students, residents and fellows.
