Resource Faculty in Medical Education

Guiding Principles

To improve the quality of medical education, both undergraduate and graduate, at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, a group of resource faculty representing all major clinical departments will be selected based upon individual expertise and commitment to teaching. These faculty members will enhance their own capabilities as teachers/educators, serve as liaisons between their departments and the BIDMC Center for Education, and provide leadership in professional development activities, faculty and program assessment, and curriculum development. This program will enhance the quality of our faculty broadly throughout the institution and strengthen medical education across the continuum of undergraduate and graduate trainees.

Responsibilities of Resource Faculty in Medical Education+

Each member of the resource faculty will:

  • Develop a personal program of professional development to enhance his/her own knowledge and skills as an educator.
  • Assist in the identification, development, and implementation of professional development programs with particular attention to the needs of his/her own department.
  • Perform peer review of teaching of faculty members from all departments at BIDMC.
  • Work with program directors to develop assessment tools for trainees, faculty, and programs.
  • Work with members of the Shapiro Institute, program directors, and clerkship directors to develop new curricula for trainees with particular attention to interdepartmental and interdisciplinary experiences.
  • Work with program and clerkship directors to enhance the educational experience of medical students on clinical rotations.
  • Serve as a resource for faculty members within their department on educational issues.
  • Keep abreast of major educational reform efforts at HMS and communicate proposed and confirmed changes to their departments.
  • Commit to regular meetings to share ideas and analyze problems common to different programs.

Each major clinical department (those with core residency programs sponsored by BIDMC – see below) will have one resource faculty member with the exception of Surgery (2 resource faculty) and Medicine (3 resource faculty).

Selection of Resource Faculty

Each department chair will nominate two faculty members for each of the resource faculty positions available to his/her department. Applications should include:

  • A letter of support from the Department Chair.
  • A letter from the applicant in which he/she details qualifications, professional goals, and commitment to the program. The applicant should also include a brief analysis of what he/she believes to be the primary professional development need within the department, and outline ideas to address that need.
  • CV of the applicant.

A committee within the Shapiro Institute will review the applications and select the resource faculty.
Appointments as resource faculty members are for one year and are renewable at the discretion of the VP for Education in consultation with the Department Chair. The VP for Education meets with each resource faculty member twice a year to review his/her activities and performance.
