Highlights of the Disability Insurance Plans for ACGME House Staff
Eligibility: House staff members are eligible for Short- and Long-Term Disability Plans on your first day of training at BIDMC.
Enrollment: Enrollment is automatic.
Cost: There is no cost to you; the full cost of these plans is paid by BIDMC.
Note: You have the opportunity to purchase additional Long-Term Disability coverage if you wish, as described below.
Short-Term Disability (STD) Plan Benefits:
Generally, if you are totally disabled due to an injury or illness* and unable to work, the STD plan will pay:
- 100% of your regular weekly base pay for weeks 1 through 8, and
- 60% of your regular weekly base pay for weeks 9 through 26.
Total disability means that you are unable to perform all the material and substantial duties of your job, on an active employment basis, due to injury or illness.
* The STD Plan also provides benefits if you are out of work for the birth of a child. Generally, coverage is available for 6 weeks following a normal delivery and 8 weeks following a Caesarian section (exceptions may be made on an individual basis with documentation).
Long-Term Disability (LTD) Plan Benefits:
If you are disabled for more than 26 weeks, you may qualify for LTD benefits. Under this plan, you are automatically enrolled for a benefit that provides 50% of your regular weekly base pay for as long as you are totally disabled, up to age 65 (or longer depending on when your disability begins). The maximum monthly benefit is $7,500. If you wish, you may buy-up to a 60% benefit; contact the Benefits Office for details.
