Highlights of the Disability Insurance Plans for ACGME House Staff

 

Eligibility:  House staff members in ACGME accredited programs are eligible for Short- and Long-Term Disability Plans on your first day of training at BIDMC.
Enrollment: Enrollment is automatic.
Cost: There is no cost to you; the full cost of these plans is paid by BIDMC.

Note: You have the opportunity to purchase additional Long-Term Disability coverage if you wish, as described below.  

Short Term Disability: Employees in ACMGE accredited program are automatically enrolled in the Trainee Short Term Disability (STD) Plan at no cost on your first day of training.

Employees in ACMGE accredited program are automatically enrolled in the Trainee Short Term Disability (STD) Plan at no cost on your first day of training.

Generally, the plan will pay 100% of your regular base pay for weeks 1 to 8 and 60% of your regular base pay for weeks 9 to 26 if you are out of work and unable to perform all the duties of your job due to a non-work related illness or injury.

For maternity leave, this is a salary continuation policy and would provide you with compensation as outlined above for 12 weeks.

Employees in a non-ACGME programs will have the opportunity to purchase a Short Term Disability benefit through post-tax deductions.

Long-Term Disability (LTD): Full-time employees in ACGME accredited programs are automatically enrolled for LTD insurance. If you are totally disabled and out of work for six or more months, the plan provides 50% of monthly pay up to $7,500 per month. Generally, benefits are payable to age 65. You may buy up to a 60% LTD benefit if you wish.

Applying for Benefits:
If you become disabled and are unable to work, please contact:

  • Your Program Director or Chief, and
  • The Benefits Office (617) 632-9400.

The Benefits Office will explain the process and give you any necessary forms to complete to apply for STD and/or LTD benefits.

Other Plan Information:
Generally, STD and LTD plan benefits are not payable for disabilities resulting from any act of war, self-inflicted injuries, participation in a riot, committing (or attempting to commit) an indictable offense or injury on the job.
