Podiatry: Education

Residency Program

The Division of Podiatric Surgery sponsors a three year residency program in podiatric surgery.

Externship Program

The Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center (BIDMC) externship program is designed to expose the fourth year podiatric medical student to the Division of Podiatric Surgery at BIDMC.

About BIDMC

BIDMC is the third largest hospital in Boston and is a major teaching hospital of Harvard Medical School. It is located in the Longwood Medical Area near Joslin Diabetes Center, Children’s Hospital, Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, Harvard Medical School and the Harvard School of Public Health.

All surgical specialties practice at BIDMC. In addition to the BIDMC podiatric surgery residency program (PM&S-36), there are fully approved residency programs in general surgery, internal medicine, pathology, radiology, emergency medicine, and many others. There are also fellowships in cardiology, endocrinology, infectious disease, vascular surgery, general medicine, transplant surgery, gastroenterology, hematology/oncology, pulmonary, and critical care.

About Podiatric Surgery Division

The Podiatric Surgery service was originally established as the New England Deaconess Hospital to render quality care to its large population of patients with diabetes. Since this time, it has merged to become a division within the Department of Surgery at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center. Although we enjoy a close relationship with Joslin Diabetes Center, the podiatric surgery division includes patients with all types of lower limb conditions. This provides a well-rounded residency training experience. Some of these lower limb conditions include sports medicine related injuries and conditions, all forefoot, midfoot, and rearfoot deformities, lower limb complications from diabetes, infections, traumas, biomechanical deformities, and major limb deformities. Because this is a major tertiary center, many complex limb salvage and revision cases are referred to the podiatric surgery division for care. Referrals for patients with unusual or difficult problems are encouraged. The most current diagnostic, preventative, and therapeutic modalities are employed in the treatment of patients.

The Division of Podiatric Surgery maintains many busy clinics and operating room schedules. There are 8 full-time podiatric surgeons, 1 fellow, 6 residents (2-first year, 2-second year, 2-third year residents), and an active externship program. There are many ongoing clinical trials with a full research staff within the division. The clinics also consists of a practice manager, surgical coordinator, nursing, many practice assistants, prosthetist and orthotic technician, orthopedic technicians, and many other vital personnel such as billing and referral coordinators.
