A Letter From Our Chief

I welcome your interest in our General Surgery Residency program. Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, a flagship teaching hospital of Harvard Medical School, is known for its commitment to leading edge research, outstanding educational programs, and exemplary patient care.

We believe that our residents are the lifeblood of the Department of Surgery. Our highly accomplished, committed faculty seeks to challenge residents in a supportive environment. We encourage open discussion of differences in opinion, because the successful surgeon is not only proficient in operative technique, but also a skilled critical thinker.

Our clinical curriculum, combined with the research opportunities at the Medical Center and within the medical school quadrangle, provide for an unparalleled resident experience. Graduates of our program go on to contribute to vital research, provide superior patient care, become leaders in their fields, and educate the next generation of surgeons.

The Department’s commitment to excellence in surgical education is apparent in the following pages, which detail our training program. We invite you to join us, and wish you all the best as you embark on your surgical career.

A Letter From Our Program Director

On behalf of the faculty of the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center Department of Surgery, I welcome your interest in our general surgery training program. With a wealth of clinical material, and exceptional research opportunities, we are committed to training superior clinicians who will also be the future leaders in American surgery. Affiliated with Harvard Medical School, we are proud of our commitment to surgical education and educational innovation at every level. Our surgical skills lab is one of only a few such centers dedicated to the education of surgical residents and students. Our residents’ esprit de corps attests to that commitment.

Our graduates’ superior records – on their Board exams, in obtaining fellowships, and in obtaining positions in both academic and private practice – attest to the quality of our residents and the breadth of experience they receive.

Most of our current residents come from the top 10% of their graduating class, with corresponding National Board scores. Interested individuals who are committed to excellence in clinical care, education, and research are encouraged to apply through ERAS.

We look forward to receiving your completed application and we appreciate your interest in the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center Program in General Surgery.
