Spine Center: Education

Spine Center staff are honored to help train the next generation of spine specialists. In addition to providing training for Harvard Medical School students and interns/residents, the center offers a Combined Spine Fellowship.

The goal of the Combined Spine Fellowship is to provide a rich academic environment in which an exemplary spine surgeon can gain the necessary experience to be fully capable of evaluating and treating adult spinal disorders. This unusual fellowship delivers a wide perspective on the spine through combined neurosurgical spine and orthopaedic spine training. Co-directed by Dr. Michael Groff, a neurological surgeon, and Dr. Kevin McGuire, an orthopaedic surgeon, it provides an excellent opportunity to train in the diagnosis and management of a variety of spinal disorders, including degenerative disease of the spine, adult spinal deformity, trauma and tumor. The fellow will receive extensive surgical experience in anterior and posterior surgical approaches to the cervical, thoracic and lumbar spine. The fellow will be responsible for teaching residents, and must complete one project suitable for publication during the year. Candidates must have successfully completed an orthopaedic residency and be board-eligible or -certified prior to the fellowship. This fellowship is ACGME accredited. In addition, each year, the Spine Center presents the Augustus A. White, III, M.D., Ph.D. Spine Symposium, an event that allows trainees and specialists to learn about topics in leading-edge spine care.
