Physical/Technical Requirements
The School of Nuclear Medicine Technology at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center has established technical and physical standards that must be met by each student admitted into the program. Each student must be able to:
- Visually differentiate subtle shades of gray/color in order to determine the quality of images.
- Conceptually visualize human anatomy in three dimensions
- Verbally communicate in a clear and concise manner to patients and other health professionals.
- Understand and apply clinical instructions given.
- Perform intravenous injections.
- Accurately and safely prepare radiopharmaceuticals and withdraw patient doses from within a fume hood and/or lead lined work stations.
- Stand and walk for majority of work time.
- Operate diagnostic equipment; this includes lifting, reaching, bending, stooping, and crouching.
- Lift a minimum of fifty (50) pounds of weight, up and over head level. Push and pull 50 pound loads routinely.
- Lift and move immobile patient from stretcher to imaging table in a 2-person transfer.
- Push a patient in a wheelchair or stretcher 300 feet.
- Input data, including terminology and numbers, into imaging console and computers.
- Monitor audio and video equipment during patient exams.
- Monitor equipment and background sounds during equipment operation.
- Complete BLS (basic life support) training and be able to administer CPR.
- Complete all required competencies in a manner that demonstrates accuracy, consistency, and retention of learned skills and information
