School of Nuclear Medicine Technology: Education
Nuclear Medicine combines chemistry, physics, mathematics, computer technology and medicine in using radioactive materials to diagnose and treat diseases. Nuclear Medicine is different from other traditional modalities within radiology, because nuclear medicine is the study of the physiology and molecular aspects of particular diseases.
The nuclear medicine technologist is a highly specialized health care professional who is nationally certified and/or registered to work closely with nuclear medicine physicians and/or cardiologists.
Duties and responsibilities of the technologist include preparation and administration of radioactive compounds; performance of patient imaging procedures and therapeutic procedures; computer processing and image manipulation; and provision of images, data analysis, and patient information to the physician for diagnostic interpretation.
