A one-year fellowship in Vascular/Interventional Radiology is offered at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center. The training covers a comprehensive variety of both vascular and nonvascular diagnostic and interventional procedures. These include percutaneous transluminal angioplasty (peripheral, aortic, visceral, and brachiocephalic arteries and veins), atherectomy, stent placement (peripheral, renal, aortic, and venous), venous access, various therapeutic embolizations, includes chemo-embolization, thrombolysis, inferior vena caval filter placement, and gastrointestinal, biliary, genitourinary, and thoracic interventions. Approximately 4,700 diagnostic and interventional procedures are performed per year.

The fellow will work with seven fellowship-trained interventional radiologists, one to two residents per month, technologists, nurses and a physician assistant. One third of the fellow's time is reserved for research and non-invasive vascular imaging, including MR angiography, ultrasound, and EBCT. Clinical and/or basic research with multiple imaging modalities will be encouraged and expected in exchange for dedicated research time. There is a dedicated interventional basic science laboratory with the ability for custom device development and manufacturing, a dedicated animal imaging laboratory and access to CT and MRI imaging equipment for animal research.

The fellowship program director and his associates are experienced in mentoring, which is reflected in numerous awards won by recent prior fellows. The uniqueness of the program is the availability of a broad spectrum of cases with emphasis on advanced techniques and cutting edge technology.

After we receive the fellowship applications there will be a first screening through the interventional radiology faculty. We then typically begin with a phone interview to assess whether there is a mutual fulfillment of expectations. Then in a second step we will invite the top 10% of applicants for an interview. Interviews are anticipated for the months of April to May. We participate in the match. The reason for our selected invitation schedule is because of the consideration of high costs of travel for the candidates, so every candidate who is invited is assured of a very high rating.
