The NCI Training Fellowship in Cancer Radiology is an interdisciplinary and basic research program specifically designed for those entering or specializing in radiology. This program focuses on cancer and the methods of treatment as they relate to physiology, biochemistry, and molecular biology. Our goal is to train highly qualified, academically-committed physicians as cancer researchers, placing them under the expert tutelage of established investigators in radiology, radiation therapy, medicine, nuclear medicine, and surgery. Applicants should be ABR certified or eligible but pre-residency candidates intent on pursuing residency training in radiology and candidates with PhD degrees will also be considered.
During the first year of the program, the fellow will collaborate with a mentor on an existing research project; in the second year, the fellow will design his/her own research project under the mentor's guidance. In this atmosphere of intensive basic research activity, fellows gain knowledge of fundamental principles of laboratory investigation and the ethical principles of laboratory conduct as well as formal course work in research design, statistics, data analysis, and evaluation of published research.
Candidates must demonstrate commitment to and long-term interest in basic research in cancer and academic radiology. Applicants must be US citizens or nationals. Interested candidates should apply one year prior to the two-year training period. Qualifications for acceptance into the program are based on academic performance, a curriculum vitae, and three letters of recommendation attesting to the candidate's interest in basic research in cancer and his or her interest in pursuing a career in academia.
