Residents and Fellows in the Pathology Department are allowed four weeks of vacation per year.
Book Fund (PDA)/Travel to Conferences & Meetings
Residents are provided a yearly Professional Development Account for the purchase of medical texts, society memberships, etc. For the current academic year, first year residents will receive $800 for the year as well as an iPad and PGY 2, 3 and 4 residents will receive $1700. All residents are also provided up to $1500 for travel to a meeting at which they will be presenting (poster or talk) upon approval by the residency director.
Employee/Occupational Health Services
In addition to a pre-employment occupation evaluation for work suitability, employee/occupation health services provides treatment of minor illness and occupational-related health care.
Travel Accident Insurance:
You are covered by insurance for accidents incurred while traveling on hospital business.
You are eligible for retirement, disability, and survivor benefits as defined by federal law.
Worker's Compensation and Unemployment Compensation:
The hospital provides workers' compensation and unemployment compensation as defined by state law.
Professional Liability Insurance
The hospital provides coverage for residents and fellows related to their duties in our program.

Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center offers a broad-based benefits program, with choice and flexibility to meet diverse needs. The benefits summarized here are available to House Officers who are in budgeted positions and regularly scheduled to work 20 or more hours per week. Benefits become effective within the first month of your employment.
Medical Insurance: The hospital provides a choice of four medical plans. Three are administered by Harvard Pilgrim Health Care: the Value and Plus point-of-service plans (POS) and a preferred provider organization (PPO). You may also join a health maintenance organization (HMO): Neighborhood Health Plan. Each plan includes prescription drug coverage. The Medical Center contributes about 80% of the cost of medical coverage; your share of the cost is pre-tax.
Dental Coverage: You may join the Delta Dental PPO Plus Premier Plan, which provides coverage for dental services such as cleanings, diagnostic x-rays, fillings, tooth extraction, crown and bridge work. Orthodontia benefits are available up to age 19. You pay the full cost of this plan, pre-tax.
Vision: Through the EyeMed Vision Plan, you have coverage for your eye wear materials: frames and lenses, including contact lenses. (Eye exams are covered through the medical plans.) You pay the full cost of this benefit pre-tax.
Note: You may enroll your spouse or same-sex domestic partner (if you live outside Massachusetts), and your dependent children, for medical, dental and vision coverage.
Flexible Spending Accounts: You may set aside money, pre-tax, to pay for certain out-of-pocket medical care and dependent care expenses with tax-free dollars. You choose how much to contribute to one or both accounts, up to the annual plan maximums.
Basic Group Life Insurance: The Medical Center provides basic group term life insurance coverage in the amount of one times your annual base pay at no cost to you.
Supplemental and Dependent Life Insurance: You may purchase additional life insurance for yourself, from ½ up to five times your annual base pay (in ½ pay increments). You may also choose to purchase life insurance coverage for your spouse, same-sex domestic partner (if you live outside Massachusetts) and dependent children.
HIV Supplemental Benefit Plan: This plan, fully paid by BIDMC, provides financial assistance and other services if you become HIV positive as the result of a work-related exposure.
Short-term Disability Insurance: You are automatically enrolled in a Trainee Short-term Disability (STD) Plan, at no cost to you, on your first day of training. Generally, the plan will pay 100% of your regular base pay for weeks 1 to 8, and 60% of your regular base pay for weeks 9 to 26, if you are out of work and unable to perform all the duties of your job due to illness or injury. You also have the opportunity to purchase additional STD coverage if you wish. (If you do, any benefits payable under the policy will be reduced by payments received from the Trainee STD Plan.)
Long-term Disability Insurance: You are automatically enrolled for long-term disability insurance that provides 50% of monthly pay up to $7,500 per month after being absent from work for six months. You may buy up to a 60% benefit if you wish.
Voluntary 401(k) and 403(b) Savings Plans: You may save pre-tax money for your retirement through the Medical Center's 401(k) and/or 403(b) savings plans. You choose where to direct your 401(k) contributions from a wide range of funds offered by Fidelity Investments. Any 403(b) contributions may be invested with Fidelity and/or TIAA-CREF. (Note: There are no Medical Center matching contributions to your accounts.)
