Official Hospital of the Boston Red Sox
Working as a staff physician at Fenway Park
Working as part of the medical staff at Fenway Park is a spectacular experience. This is a wonderful chance to act as a healthcare provider at one of the most historic ballparks in the country. The games are always sold out, the atmosphere is tremendous, and this provides an excellent opportunity to hone field-based medical skills. Evenings typically consist of arriving at Fenway 30 minutes prior to the first pitch and free dinner is provided in the staff cafeteria. Half of the game is spent providing care within the medical stand, while the other half is spent among the greatest seats in baseball….the Green Monster. You accompany a nurse for the entirety of the game and tend to spectators as necessary, where complaints range from the most benign to the most grave. There is an attending for the evening for supervision and an ambulance ready for those that require an ED evaluation. You stay until the park has emptied and realize that it's possible to enjoy both medicine and baseball simultaneously. Also, it is not folklore that residents have received free tickets for their hard work.
Attention baseball lovers! One of the great perks of joining the residency program at BIDMC, "the Official Hospital of the Boston Red Sox", is that it gives us the chance to enjoy baseball games at Fenway Park for a fraction of the price. You don't need to be a fan of the Red Sox or a member of Red Sox Nation to appreciate the atmosphere and nostalgia that is unique to America's Oldest Ballpark. Here's how it works. At each game a line forms beside Gate B near Ted Williams' statue. Thirty minutes after the start of the game, any remaining tickets are released to BIDMC employees for $5 each. With your hospital ID, you have the opportunity to purchase up to 2 tickets for every regular season game from April through September. Typical seats range from standing room to directly behind home plate! With the added savings from purchasing these discounted tickets, you can even afford to indulge in the "Fenway Frank", the ballpark's famous hotdog. In addition to discount ticket benefits, each year "high demand" tickets are auctioned off to hospital employees only. Past auctions have been for Yankees vs Red Sox tickets and playoff tickets.
