Sub-Intern Resident Service
The Sub-Intern Resident Service (SIRS) is a new service at the BIDMC which pairs senior medical students with residents on the general inpatient wards. This is a rewarding experience as it allows residents to fine tune their teaching skills while providing an enriching sub-internship experience for the medical students. The rotation consists of four teams of one resident and one medical student. Each team takes call every fourth night and carries 4-6 patients. The sub-interns truly feel like interns as they perform initial assessments, write all orders, respond to all pages, and prepare all discharge paperwork. The residents supervise closely while teaching the students basic concepts important to inpatient care. Like all inpatient rotations, there are plenty of teaching conferences, daily attending rounds, and geographic distribution of patients.
