Continuity Practice Sites
Interns begin their work at Healthcare Associates, the West Roxbury VA Hospital, or Dimock Community Health Center. Primary care residents start a second practice in their JAR years and can chose to add any of these three sites or can choose amongst a wide range of additional sites depending upon their interests.
Healthcare Associates is the primary care site for almost all BIDMC housestaff. General medicine faculty and fellows practice in beautiful space in the Carl Shapiro Medical Center. Nurse practitioners, social work therapists, and community resource specialists all help provide outstanding care to our patients. Residents are assigned to a general medicine faculty preceptor with similar interests. Our faculty have particular expertise in women's health, minority health, HIV, addictions, geriatrics, and student health.
West Roxbury Veteran's Administration hosts incoming interns and primary care residents electing the VA as their second continuity site. Residents at the VA have at least 1 session per month in the HCA women's health practice to complement their experience.
Dimock Community Health Center hosts both incoming interns as their primary site and primary care residents electing Dimock as their second site. Dimock provides care for an inner city population that is largely African American and Latino. Dimock has special services in HIV and in addictions that are used for residency training.
Fenway Community Health Center is nationally known for its care of GLBT patients. It is one of several sites that is particularly suited for residents interested in HIV care. Fenway has a variety of special services including anonymous HIV testing, acupuncture, and chiropractic.
Sydney Borum Community Health Center is in downtown Boston next to Boston Common. It cares primarily for at risk youth with a high prevalence of substance abuse and HIV. Many of these patients are sex workers and are homeless. There is also a large trans-gender population.
Bowdoin Street Community Health Center is in Dorchester and serves a highly diverse patient population and is pioneering diabetes group medical visits.
Joseph M. Smith Community Health Center is in Allston and Waltham and serves a highly diverse immigrant population.
BIDMC Lexington is west of Boston in Lexington, MA. Peter Zurmoskis, MD, and Lisa Gilbert, MD have served as primary preceptors at this popular site for many years.
Medical Care Center North is in Chelsea, MA, just north of Boston. Approximately half of the population served in Chelsea is Latino.
BIDHC - Brookline is a closely affiliated practice near the hospital. Residents work with Dr. Suzanne Gleysteen who has a practice largely focused on women's health with a particular focus on eating disorders.
BIDHC - Boston is in downtown Boston easily reached by public transportation. Residents work with Dr. David Savitz who has been in continuous primary care practice for more than 30 years.
Beth Israel Medical Center - Needham Campus is a newly formed private practice affiliated with our Needham campus. While the site is new, the faculty are seasoned and have worked with residents and students in several former teaching sites.
GERIATRICS OPTIONS
Urban Medical Group is near the hospital in Jamaica Plain and is run by a dedicated group of physicians working in a wide range of settings. Faculty have an office-based practice but also work in nursing homes, elder housing, home care, and hospice. BIDMC geriatrics faculty host residents interested in geriatrics in their hospital-based primary care geriatrics practice.
STUDENT HEALTH/ADOLESCENT MEDICINE
Simmons Student Health Center is across the street from the hospital. Most students are women; this is a great place to do primary care of young women.
Adolescent Medicine Practice at Children's Hospital is available for housestaff with a career interest in adolescent medicine.
Brandeis Student Health Center is in Waltham.

We have arranged relationships for residents with focused areas of interest including obesity/nutrition, mind/body medicine, and palliative care.
