Areas of Focus

Residents can elect to focus on a particular area of interest within primary care.

Research:

Faculty in general medicine welcome collaboration with our residents. Residents with advanced degrees (MPH, PhD) generally continue research through residency and may move directly into faculty research positions after residency. Residents without advanced degrees may begin a research project in residency and get an early start to inform general medicine fellowship research pathways. Residents are encouraged to present their work nationally at the Society of General Internal Medicine or in other appropriate venues.

Education:

All of our residents teach, but we have specific experiences that guide career development for those interested in clinician-educator careers. There are teaching resident electives focused upon teaching of interns and medical students. Six of our residents work as inpatient or outpatient chief residents at the
West Roxbury VA. Residents may also chose an education project as their area of concentration.

HIV:

Healthcare Associates has special HIV consultation and case management services embedded within the practice and strives to ensure that all residents in the practice care for some HIV patients. Dr. Howard Libman directs that program; he is also involved in international HIV work. Residents interested in HIV medicine may also choose to work at Dimock, Fenway, or Sydney Borum Community Health Centers (continuity practice sites).  There are also electives in ID/HIV and at Outer Cape Community Health Center in Wellfleet and Provincetown. Residents doing an HIV area of concentration may work on a project in HIV medicine. There are also several international experiences focused upon HIV.

Women's Health:

While all of our residents have substantial clinical and curricular experience in women's health, residents can tailor their experiences to focus further in women's health. Residents may work with women's health faculty in our main Healthcare Associates practice, in our Women's Health practice within HCA, in student health settings, or with community faculty with particular women's health interest. Residents may also choose several women's health focused electives including our overall women's health elective focused on gynecology and breast health, Planned Parenthood, student health, and adolescent medicine. Additional experiences are available in the Area of Concentration in women's health.

Geriatrics:

All of our residents have substantial clinical and curricular experience in geriatrics. The hospital recently enhanced geriatric training through a grant from the Reynolds Foundation. In addition, we offer continuity experiences with faculty in the Geriatrics Division of BIDMC and with Urban Medical Group faculty who work in a wide range of geriatrics settings. We offer geriatrics electives at Urban Medical Group and at the Hebrew Senior Life Center
