How do I apply to the Internal Medicine Residency Training Program?
All applications to the BIDMC Internal Medicine Residency Training Program must be submitted through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS) and the National Residency Matching Program (NRMP).
What documents must be submitted to complete my application?
A completed application must be obtained before a decision is made to send an invitation to interview. The following documents must be submitted in order to complete your application:
- Curriculum vitae (generated by ERAS )
- Personal statement
- Medical Student Performance Evaluation (fomerly Dean's letter)
- Medical school transcript
- USMLE Steps 1 & 2 scores or the equivalent FLEX examinations. Step 1 required at the time of interview. Any matched applicant in the State of Massachusetts will not be able to apply for a limited license until these scores are reported.
- Letter from the Chair of the applicant's Department of Medicine or from a designee (the latter must indicate that his/her letter is in place of a Chair's letter). A chairman's letter is preferred, but not required for applicants applying to our Preliminary Program.
- Two additional letters of recommendation. Additional letters may be submitted without penalty.
- Applicants who are matching as a couple must include the name and program of their significant other at the bottom of the personal statement
Can I send more than the required number of recommendation letters?
Only three letters are required, but more may be submitted without penalty.
May I send copies of my reprints?
Reprints are not required, but will be added to your application file if submitted.
What is the application deadline?
The application deadline is November 1st
What are the requirements for International Medical Graduates?
In addition to a completed application, International Medical Graduates must be ECFMG Certified, or in the process of becoming certified (required to start internship). More information is available here http://www.ecfmg.org/about/index.html. You must submit two letters of recommendation from U.S. clinical supervisors. At least one year of clinical experience in the United States is required and your medical school graduation date must be within the past 4 years.
Do you sponsor any visas?
The BIDMC Internal Medicine Residency Training Program will sponsor J-1 and H1-B Visas.
Is there a separate Primary Care Track at BIDMC?
Applicants interested in Primary Care should apply to the Categorical Program. There is no separate match number for the Primary Care Track. Residents express their interest in this track during their internship year and participate in the Program during the PGY2 and PGY3 years. The Primary Care Track offers additional opportunities for clinical experience and mentoring in the outpatient setting. Visit the frequently asked questions page for more information.
How are interviews scheduled?
Interviews are granted by invitation only. All completed applications are reviewed by our Selection Committee. Once a decision has been made to invite a candidate to interview, an invitation will be sent via email. The email will contain the interview dates available, and will provide instructions on how to schedule your interview.
How many applications does the program receive annually?
The Internal Medicine Residency Training Program receives in excess of 2,000 applications annually.
