Nephrology: Education
Our fellowship program of training in nephrology is a combined clinical and laboratory one, the exact nature of which can be determined in large part by the past experience and career objectives of the individual trainee. Our research-oriented program consists of a year of clinical renal medicine followed typically by two years of research fellowship. Our clinically-oriented fellowship consists of two years of clinical renal training, including time allotted to clinical research. Most of the graduates of our program go on to full time, highly successful careers in academic medicine. Of the 97 fellows who have completed their renal training since 1973, 70 are academic physicians, of which 17 are full professors, 14 are associate professors, 23 are assistant professors, 10 are nephrology division chiefs, 2 are vice-chairmen, and 3 are associate deans. Applications from minorities are welcome.
Our mission is to train the future leaders in nephrology. Whether our trainees will provide care for nephrology patients, perform clinical or laboratory bench research, or become academic teachers, they will be the leaders in their respective areas. The fellowship will provide the tools needed to chart the future of our specialty, with a focus on nurturing and educating the next generation of nephrologists.
