Gerontology: Education
An ACGME accredited fellowship training in Geriatric Medicine is offered at Harvard Medical School through Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center to physicians interested in academic careers in geriatrics. The Program offers one-year ACGME accredited fellowships. Those Fellows interested in research or clinician leader-educator academic careers may stay for a second year. A third year of fellowship is also possible if funding is available.
Fellows qualify for the ABIM geriatrician examination after one year. Fellows electing to remain beyond the first year may pursue one of two tracks. One track is intended for physicians who wish to pursue a research career in geriatrics. This option provides a clinical year followed by an intensive year of clinical research or research in basic science, epidemiology, health services or ethics. The second track is designed for those who plan to serve as clinician-educators in an academic geriatrics setting. This option allows for clinical work in the first year, which is continued through part of the second year. The remainder of the second year is devoted to a project focusing on the design or evaluation of a program in geriatric education or the administration of geriatrics services.
All fellows receive an appointment to Harvard Medical School through the Gerontology Division of Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center.
