The fellowship in Vascular Anesthesia is geared towards those who seek academic careers and will be involved in either basic or clinical research taking advantage of the large surgical volume (currently about 1500/year, but expected to increase). Research opportunities exist not only within the division of vascular anesthesia, but also in collaboration with vascular surgery, cardiac surgery, and podiatry. Current research projects within the division include (1) anesthetic effects on microvessels in the coronary and systemic circulation, (2) drug effects in an animal model of subarachnoid hemorrhage, (3) hemodynamic effects of different airway management techniques in carotid surgery, and (4) comparison of different inhalational anesthetic agents for their cardiovascular morbidity profile. We are actively engaged in on-site testing of new pharmaceuticals and/or medical devices and are currently evaluating non-invasive cardiac output monitoring and cerebral oximetry.
