Center for Faculty Development

The Center for Faculty Development (CFD) was established in October 2001.  The purpose of the CFD is to support the faculty at BIDMC in the Harvard Medical School promotion process, provide academic career counseling and advice, and ombuds services. The CFD also sponsors courses, seminars and programs that promote the academic and career skills development of the BIDMC faculty.  Topics of the seminars include grant writing and the review process, scientific writing, the promotion process, career and life balance, risk management, parenting, patenting your science, stress management, the  changing face of medicine and cultural competency. The CFD has three subcommittees to address needs of the basic science and clinical science investigators, women and underrepresented faculty.  Many of the programs and seminars are open to residents and fellows. A mentorship program has been developed to assist junior faculty to identify mid-career and senior faculty that can serve as mentors on a long or short term basis. A database of mentors is maintained for ready access for a match.  Special CME courses have been sponsored by the CFD that include an annual Leadership Course for Junior Faculty, Mentorship Course, Course for Laboratory Investigators (even years) and a Course for Clinical Investigators (odd years) and a Course on the Business of Medicine.  Every Spring a Visiting Professor Lecture is sponsored by the CFD Women's Subcommittee.  The CFD co-sponsors many programs with HMS and the offices of career development of the Harvard affiliated hospitals, including a Leadership course for those with new leadership responsibilities as physicians and scientists.  The CFD Women's Subcommittee was also instrumental in obtaining faculty access to emergency  childcare from Parents-in a Pinch via HMFP.  This website includes information on the courses and seminars offered from CFD as well as materials from many of the speakers.  This website also contains information regarding important faculty resources and links to the HMS "Purple Book" for the promotion process, the "Red Book" for grants, Search Guidelines for hiring new BIDMC faculty and a link to Harvard University regarding the results of the Task Forces recommendations to support and advance the careers of women and underrepresented minority faculty.
