Fellowship Project: Designing a Resident as Teacher curriculum for Anesthesiology residents.
Dr. Lauren Fisher is the Director of Medical Student Education in the Department of Anesthesia, Critical Care and Pain Management and a Clinical Instructor in Anesthesiology at Harvard Medical School. Dr. Fisher earned her bachelor's degree in psychology at Tufts University in Medford, Massachusetts. She received her Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine degree at the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine. After an intern year at Delaware County Memorial Hospital in Drexel Hill, Pennsylvania she completed an Anesthesia Residency at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center. During her final year of residency she served as chief resident, and began to develop an interest in medical education. Having acquired a clinical interest in regional nerve blocks, Dr. Fisher went on to serve as a fellow in regional anesthesia at the Hospital for Special Surgery of the Weill Cornell Medical College in New York, New York.
As a Rabkin Fellow, Dr. Fisher created a novel curriculum to develop teaching skills in PGY 2-4 residents. These residents play a large part in the educational experience of the third and fourth year medical students rotating through the department. A series of hands-on workshops exposed the residents to adult education theory and feedback skills. Through her mentorship, residents created a series of on line modules to be used as teaching tools for residents teaching the medical students. These modules were then posted on the department intranet and are designed so that any resident can teach any medical student at any time. This work was presented as a multimedia presentation at both a regional and international anesthesia conference.
As the newly appointed Director of Medical Student Education in the Department of Anesthesia, Dr. Fisher continues to strive to implement curricular initiatives to improve the residents' confidence in teaching as well as to maximize the medical students' learning experience on service.
