Clinician Educator Track

Advance Your Career Goals

Do you envision a career as a clinician educator? If so, the Internal Medicine Residency Clinician Educator Track at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical center is a unique opportunity to develop the skills necessary to become a leader in medical education.

Develop Skills Needed as an Educator

While resident-as-teacher programs offer an opportunity to learn many of the basic elements of effective teaching, more training is needed to fully develop the skills needed to succeed as a future clinician educator.

This novel clinician educator track will provide you the opportunity to rapidly advance your career goals.

More Than The Ability to Teach Effectively

A successful academic clinician educator needs more than the ability to teach effectively. To excel as a clinician educator, you must also:

  • Possess the knowledge and skills needed to evaluate learners and programs and effectively design new curricular offerings.
  • Develop the expertise necessary to be an efficient administrator, effective leader and successful change agent.
  • Master the skills needed to investigate and disseminate important educational developments.

Curriculum and Timeline

Categorical residents who wish to participate in the Clinician Educator Track will apply for a position during their intern year.  If accepted in to the track, you will participate in a comprehensive longitudinal curriculum that will extend through the last two and a half years of your residency training.

Track Features

Small Group Sessions

During highly interactive, small group sessions we will discuss and apply the key principles of medical education and practice teaching skills.

Observation and Taping of Teaching Sessions

To enhance your teaching skills and to facilitate self refection and peer and faculty feedback, we will directly observe and video tape many of your teaching sessions.

Mentor

You will be paired with a mentor who will provide longitudinal guidance and support.

Research Course and Project

To enhance your skills as an educational researcher, you will have the opportunity to participate in our highly successful two-week research course and will work with mentors to create and implement an educational scholarly project/study.

  • Apply for Clinician Educator Track
  • Participate in the Harvard CME course, Principles of Medical Education
  • Participate in HMS Academy/Shapiro Institute Educational Seminars (when schedule permits)
  • Identify a mentor and establish an educational contract
  • Identify an educational scholarly project

Year 2

  • Participate in Research Course
  • Design an educational scholarly project
  • Longitudinal curricular content focusing on core educational topics. Sessions will have assigned readings, utilize video/simulation, and emphasize application of principles of medical education. Some of the topics include:
    • Educational Contracts
    • Adult learning
    • Best clinical teaching practices
    • Assessment
    • Curricular development
    • Feedback
    • Lecturing
    • Precepting/Ambulatory teaching
    • Small group discussion/teaching
    • Bedside teaching
    • Teaching procedure skills
  • Observation of Master Teachers
  • Precept in ambulatory clinics
  • Self Reflection

Year 3

  • Complete Educational Research/Curricular project
  • Longitudinal curricular content focusing on advanced educational and leadership topics such as:
    • Negotiation skills
    • Peer observation
    • Using literature and humanities in teaching
    • Advanced feedback skills (the "problematic learner")
    • Financing in medical education
    • Time management
    • The ACGME
  • Educational and Leadership Experiences:
    • Lead resident report
    • Lead small group discussion during teaching attending rounds
    • Lead Firm Conference
    • Bedside teaching
    • Teach in HMS tutorials/Small Group Leaders
    • Lectures to HMS students
  • Educational Journal Club
