Cardiology Fellowship Overview

Combining both clinical and research training in a three-year program, BIDMC's Cardiology Fellowship aims to prepare individuals for leadership roles in academic medicine. Following an intensive 24-month clinical training period which includes all aspects of modern clinical cardiology, fellows complete their final year of training, and are encouraged to take advantage of the wide spectrum of basic, clinical and translational research opportunities available at BIDMC.

OverviewThe two-year clinical core rotation breaks down as follows:

  • 8 months in nonlaboratory clinical practice activities (cardiac consultation, inpatient cardiac care, coronary care unit, advanced heart failure management, congenital heart disease and cardiothoracic surgical and intensive care unit management)
  • 5 months in the cardiac catheterization laboratory
  • 4 months in noninvasive imaging (echocardiography, nuclear cardiology techniques, with exposure to cardiovascular magnetic resonance and cardiac computed tomography)
  • 2 months in electrocardiography, stress testing, ambulatory electrocardiographic (ECG) monitoring
  • 2 months of arrhythmias, permanent pacemaker management and electrophysiology
  • 3 month of elective time
  • A continuity ambulatory cardiovascular clinic that includes a half day per week during the training program
