Charitable Lead Trusts

Substantial tax benefits can be realized from establishing a charitable lead trust. Therefore, if you hope to transfer assets to your heirs with limited taxation, a lead trust might be an option for you.

With a lead trust, the donor transfers assets to a trustee, such as BIDMC. The trustee makes annual payments to the charity (BIDMC) for a specific term of years (typically between 10 and 25 years). When the trust term has ended, the principal plus any appreciation is transferred to your beneficiaries, typically, but not limited to, children or grandchildren.

Bequests, also known as estate gifts, are made by will and are one of BIDMC’s most enduring sources of individual support. These gifts are also a powerful expression of our faith in BIDMC’s future. A bequest not only provides significant future support to BIDMC—it can also reduce your taxable estate and allow you to maintain control over your legacy.

Gifts of Retirement Plan Assets

Naming Beth Israel Deaconess as a beneficiary of your IRA, 401K, or other qualified retirement plan account can be a particularly easy and advantageous way to leave a legacy to Beth Israel Deaconess. IRAs can be heavily taxed when left to your heirs, who may receive as little as twenty cents of each dollar after taxes. By naming Beth Israel Deaconess as a charitable beneficiary, you will receive 100 percent of monies from your plan, and your estate will have a charitable deduction for the full amount.

You can take a substantial charitable tax deduction now for the future gift of your home, and in this way can increase your current disposable income. The property is removed from your estate, possibly saving on estate taxes.

A simple way to make an important gift to the Medical Center is to include Beth Israel Deaconess as a named beneficiary of a life insurance policy. Your estate will be entitled to a charitable deduction for the amount of this gift. Or perhaps you have a paid up life insurance policy that was needed when you had young children, but is no longer necessary to meet family needs. If you donate the policy by transferring ownership to Beth Israel Deaconess, you are entitled to a charitable deduction; generally the replacement value of the policy.

The foundation’s gifts have thus far led to the development of a reliable MRI-based tumor aggressiveness score to help patients make educated treatment decisions, and a better understanding of the molecular biology that determines the behavior of human prostate cancer on MRI leading to the discovery of two genetic subsets of the disease.
