Give to BIDMC

GRATITUDE IS GOOD FOR YOU.

Everyone knows it’s good to be grateful, but did you know being grateful is good for you? Studies show that grateful people benefit from better health, more optimism, less stress and even experience fewer episodes of clinical depression. With this knowledge, we created Grateful Nation, an interactive community that gives grateful people the opportunity and resources to connect, give back, and bethankful. Hopefully, one thanks will lead to another, and we’ll create an unending positive cycle of gratitude.

As many of you may know, there has been a lot of recent news about Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center's financial crunch, and its creative efforts to cut costs, and just as importantly, avoid personnel layoffs, in this challenging economy.

Paul Levy, BIDMC's CEO, has provided an open and transparent forum for discussion on the topic, and his actions have led to media coverage both locally and nationally.  On many fronts, Paul's leadership, the generous response of the staff, and the Medical Center at large, have been positioned as a shining example of how companies and organizations can approach difficult times with compassion and creativity.

Good Progress in Budget Deliberations:
An e-mail from Paul Levy to the BIDMC community

Dear BIDMC,

It has been a very busy couple of weeks, with thousands of you attending town meetings and sending suggestions to me personally or on our chat page. As promised, here’s my analysis of the options we have considered and suggestions for going forward. This is going to be a long message, so grab a cup of coffee while you read it.  I apologize if I don’t address each and every idea that has been suggested, but I am pretty sure I will cover the major ones.  At the end of this e-mail, I will tell you how you can best provide input into the next stage of this process…Click here to read more.

Boston Globe Article: “A head with a heart”

Written by Kevin Cullen

It was the kind of meeting that is taking place in restaurant kitchens, small offices, retail storerooms, and large auditoriums all over this city, all over this state, all over this country.

Paul Levy, the guy who runs Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, was standing in Sherman Auditorium the other day, before some of the very people to whom he might soon be sending pink slips.  In the days before the meeting, Levy had been walking around the hospital, noticing little things…Click here to read more.

Comments from the Community

A reaction to the Boston Globe article "A Head with a Heart":

I just want to congratulate Paul Levy and the employees of Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center for their altruism toward their fellow employees who would have been the first to lose jobs as a result of the economic crisis affecting all of us. They understand that we all must be willing to give a little for all boats to remain afloat. This should be a lesson for other groups who seem to be circling the wagons and resisting this obvious solution to what is, hopefully, a temporary setback. This is exactly what President Obama has asked us to do, and the people at Beth Israel have responded beautifully.
