Boston Marathon

Martin PollakMonday, April 15, 2013

This year BIDMC’s Boston Marathon Team raised more than $75,000 to support our efforts to eliminate health disparities, cure disease, improve patient care, and educate the next generation of clinicians.  Make a gift in honor of these incredible men and women, whose dedication, passion, and commitment serve as a reminder of what makes the Boston Marathon, and this city, so special.

Over the last four years, athletes have raised more than $225,000 for community health programs at BIDMC including the Healthy Champions Program for at-risk kids at the BIDMC-affiliated Bowdoin Street Health Center and the Renal Division Research Team, a research effort in the Division of Nephrology, which is focused on helping to prevent and treat kidney disease in African Americans. In 2012, our runners braved the daunting 26.2-mile course and temperatures reaching into the 80s to raise more than $70,000 in support of these two programs. The team is committed to raising awareness and promoting health equity in our communities again this year. In addition to raising money for Healthy Champions and the Renal Division Research Team, this year’s runners will also run in support of BIDMC’s Blood Cancer and Bone Marrow Transplant Program and Graduate Medical Education.

Bill NawnAlso this year, experienced ultra-runner Bill Nawn completed two marathons on that historic Monday morning in memory of his mother, Marion Kerr Nawn, who passed away from leukemia in August 2010. In 2011, Bill and his team, Miles of Gratitude, raised more than $23,400 for the medical center’s Inpatient Bone Marrow Transplant Comfort Fund and Leukemia & Multiple Myeloma Immune Therapy Fund, a cause they will support again this year.

Meet our runners:

Running for Healthy Champions Program, Bowdoin Street Health Center

Marshall Bartlett, Friend of BIDMC
“I’m running the Boston Marathon in honor of my wife, Nikki, who underwent emergency brain surgery and follow-up neurology treatment at BIDMC more than a decade ago. BIDMC doctors saved her life then and have continued to support our family ever since, notably delivering our four children. I can think of no better person to honor through running the Boston Marathon and no better cause to support than BIDMC.”

Jennifer Joyce, R.N., Health Care Associates at BIDMC
“I am running to encourage others to embrace a healthy lifestyle for themselves and their families.”

Robin Maxcy, Friend of BIDMC
“I’m running in support of BIDMC because of the great treatment and care my dad has received over the past 20 years and continues to receive today.”

Running for the Renal Division Research Team

Tod Brubaker, Friend of BIDMC
“I have promised to raise money for BIDMC and its exciting kidney disease research. If you’d like to support this worthwhile cause, while also helping me retain my status as DADDY MAN in the eyes of my two daughters, please make a donation.”

Jackie Gattonini, Department of Radiology at BIDMC
“Representing BIDMC in the Boston Marathon is an opportunity of a lifetime. I will be running 26.2 miles in support of the world-class care BIDMC provides.”

Martin Pollak, M.D., Chief, Division of Nephrology at BIDMC
“I am grateful to BIDMC for the opportunity to run my second marathon on behalf of the research work of our division, which aims to reduce the large racial disparity in rates of kidney disease.”

Susan Shook, Friend of BIDMC
“I lost my father seven years ago to cancer. It was a life-changing event that is now my motivation to run 26.2 grueling miles and raise money for BIDMC. I am grateful for all contributions, and I am thrilled to support the advancement of research, technology, and compassionate care at BIDMC.

Running for the Blood Cancer and Bone Marrow Transplant Program

David Avigan, M.D., Director, Hematologic Malignancy and Bone Marrow Transplant Program at BIDMC
“I feel honored to participate in the 2013 Boston Marathon in support of BIDMC’s Blood Cancer and Bone Marrow Transplant Program.”

Yair Hadar, Friend of BIDMC
“I am proud to run the Boston Marathon in support of BIDMC’s research.”

Running for Graduate Medical Education

Carrie Tibbles, M.D., Director, Graduate Medical Education at BIDMC
“Some of the best aspects of BIDMC are the talented residents and fellows that choose to train here. They are the future of medicine. I am running in honor of them and to raise money in support of the amazing clinical training and research opportunities here at BIDMC.”

Running for Inpatient Bone Marrow Transplant Comfort Fund and Leukemia & Multiple Myeloma Immune Therapy Fund

Bill Nawn, Friend of BIDMC
“I believe we should use the gifts we've been given to give back. Running a double marathon and raising funds for BIDMC is my way of giving back for the tremendously skilled and compassionate care our mother received at BIDMC during her 2 year battle with luekemia.”
