On September, 25, 2008, Juliana Montgomery’s mother collapsed, had a seizure and went into a coma. She was diagnosed with listeria meningitis at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center (BIDMC) four days later.

Juliana had no idea how she was going to stay in touch regularly with loved ones and friends while managing her mother’s health care. In search of a way to communicate updates about her mother online, their social worker, Sarah Porell, recommended CarePages.

BIDMC provides a free, personal and private web page service through CarePages to allow patients to stay connected with family and friends before, during, and after hospitalization. Using CarePages, you can:

  • Create and update a private and personalized web page
  • Share your latest news and photos with friends and family
  • Receive messages of support
  • Learn more about healthcare issues
  • Connect to others with similar concerns

“CarePages enabled me and my family to stay in touch with our extended network of support without needing to personally update each member of that network on a daily basis,” says Juliana.

“We enjoyed having a private blog in place to keep our extended family and friends informed about my mother's progress. In return, CarePages was a wonderful way for my mother to receive messages and notes from family and friends. We played a game in which I'd read the content of a message and my mom would guess who sent the message, which was a lot of fun!”

CarePages brings people who care about you right to you while in the hospital and are fully secure, password protected, and comply with all patient privacy regulations. “CarePages met our needs in that it is a secure electronic forum to send and receive messages about my mother's health,” says Juliana. “I'd recommend CarePages because it helps lift the burden of tasks for a family to do when a loved one is recovering from a serious illness.”
