Rosario Mula was 76-years old when he came to the BIDMC Transplant Institute in hopes of getting off dialysis. He was afraid he might be too old for a kidney transplant.
"A lot of soul searching led to the decision to go forward with the transplant," says BIDMC Nephrologist Dr. Didier Mandelbrot. "But Rosario was a youthful 76 when we first met him. He felt fine, and was cleared by his cardiologist."
Now all Rosario needed was a donor. Fortunately, his son-in-law was a perfect living donor match. BIDMC surgeons performed the kidney transplant and just five days later, Rosario was able to return home, where he rapidly recovered.
Still young at heart three years later, 79-year old Rosario is doing great. His doctors say his kidney function is normal and he has no signs of kidney disease.
