How to Make an Appointment
The road to better health begins with a simple phone call. Call
617-632-9700, between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m., Monday through Friday, to make an appointment to meet with our transplant team. You will talk to a transplant nurse coordinator who will do a brief medical history before making your first appointment.
A Few Questions
Over the telephone, the nurse will ask you about your health and personal history. Here are some of the questions you can expect:
- How old are you?
- What kind of diseases and surgeries have you had?
- What kind of medications do you take?
- Have you ever been pregnant?
- Have you ever smoked?
- Do you have a history of mental health or substance abuse issues?
- What type of insurance do you have?
Easy and Prompt Access
At the end of the phone call, the scheduling staff will give you a date and a time for two appointments. You will meet with the:
- Transplant hepatologist (a physician who specializes in liver function and liver disease), transplant nurse coordinator, physician assistant, and
- Transplant social worker
We will schedule these appointments on the same day, at your convenience, based on your clinical condition. You can expect that your first visit to the Transplant Institute will take about two hours.
We ask that you see our social worker, in addition to the transplant hepatologist, because family and social support, drug and alcohol history, mental health history, insurance, and a stable housing situation are key issues that we need to assess as part of the liver transplant evaluation. Our social worker will guide you in getting the mental health, substance abuse, and healthcare services you may need to meet the requirements of our liver transplant program.
Once we have set a date, you will receive a letter in the mail outlining what to expect during your first appointment at the Transplant Institute.
Forward Medical Records
Before you arrive for these appointments, we expect your referring physician to fax us all your medical information. This supporting information should include your medical records, the medical tests you have had, and the results. It is important that we receive this information before your initial visit. Our team will review the medical information your treating providers send us to be sure the referral is appropriate.
You should call your insurance company to determine if your policy will cover all aspects of transplant care including evaluation, surgery, and follow-up care at BIDMC. Our financial coordinator can provide assistance if you have questions about coverage information you receive. Our coordinator can also work with your insurance company if the company has questions or requires additional information to determine your benefits. Please be sure to bring your insurance card with you on your first visit.
Bring a Loved One and a Notebook
We also expect you to arrive for your first two appointments with a support person - a family member or trusted friend who will be your caregiver and involved in your care before, during and after transplantation. Having a loved one at every appointment will help you as you gather information about your health and treatment. It is also helpful if you can bring a list of your medications or all of your pill bottles with you. Finally, remember to bring a list of any questions you have for the transplant team, and a notebook so you can jot down information.
