Causes

Atherosclerosis Associated with Aneurysms

The actual cause of most peripheral aneurysms is not known, but researchers believe that atherosclerosis -- hardening of the arteries -- is associated with many peripheral aneurysms, as is the case for many aortic aneurysms.

Atherosclerosis occurs when normally smooth and clear arteries get blocked by a sticky substance called plaque that builds up along the arterial walls. Over time, such arteries can narrow, stiffen and weaken.
