Single Incision Laparoscopic Kidney Surgery

GelPOINT Advanced Access PlatformSingle incision laparoscopic surgery or SILS™ is the newest approach to minimally invasive laparoscopic surgery.

Traditional laparoscopic kidney surgery involves 4-5 small abdominal incisions. The SILS™  kidney procedure uses a single 1-2 inch incision made in your belly button. A round port is placed through the incision with multiple openings for laparoscopic instrument access.

Single incision surgery may diminish recovery time, post-operative pain, and infection rates when compared to standard laparoscopic surgery. When appropriate, this may be a good surgical option for you.

Dr. Andrew Wagner, Director of Minimally Invasive Urologic Surgery here at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center is one of only a handful of urologists currently performing SILS™ in New England.

John Houle's Story

John Houle was lucky when he slipped and fell on his outdoor stairs last winter. Ongoing back pain from the fall ignited a series of tests for the New Hampshire firefighter—tests that showed he had cancer. That’s when John went to BIDMC and Dr. Drew Wagner for a new type of minimally-invasive surgery. Watch his story and learn more about this leading edge technique.
