 Making a Follow-up Appointment After Your Trauma

The Trauma Center takes a multi-disciplinary approach to trauma care including specialists in General Surgery, Orthopedics, Neurosurgery, Plastic Surgery, Radiology, Anesthesia, Social Work and Physical Therapy. Depending on your injuries, you may need to follow-up in different specialty areas. Below is a guide to help you deteremine which area you may need to see as well as their contact information.

Important information for your appointment:

Insurance Referrals:
Please remember that you may be required by your insurance company to obtain a referral from your primary care physician prior to your appointment.

Co-payments:
If your insurance plan requires an office visit co-payment on the date of service, it is expected that you will be ready to pay your co-payment during the check-in process.

Please bring the following to your appointment:
Your insurance card or a letter regarding your application for Masshealth or liability coverage
Your co-pay, if applicable
A list of medications that you are currently taking

Specialty Areas:

Trauma Surgery: 617-632-9780

You should follow-up in Trauma Surgery if your injuries included rib fractures, spleen or liver lacerations, pulmonary contusion, pneumothorax, minor skin lacerations or other minor injuries. The Trauma Surgery staff can assist you with making an appropriate follow-up appointment as well as any follow-up x-rays or testing.

Orthopedics

You should follow-up in Orthopedic Surgery for all extremity fractures, pelvic and spine fractures, dislocations, and musculoskeletal trauma injuries. The Orthopedic Staff will assist you with making an appropriate follow-up appointment as well as any follow-up x-rays or testing.

Spine Center: 617-667-8900

You should follow-up in the Spine Center for spine fractures. The Spine Center is multi-disciplinary, including Orthopedics and Neurosurgery specialists.

Neurosurgery: 617-632-7246

You should follow-up in Neurosurgery if you were seen by that specialty while a trauma patient at BIDMC. The most common neurosurgery trauma injuries are skull fractures, brain and spinal cord injuries.

You should follow-up in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery if you were seen by that specialty while a trauma patient at BIDMC. The most common injuries that require plastic surgery are major lacerations, especially of the face. Hand injuries should be followed by the Plastic Surgery Hand Clinic.

Oral Maxillofacial Surgery: 617-667-9700

Dr. Thomas Flynn will follow-up with all patients who underwent oral surgery while a trauma at BIDMC.
