Sox for Socks Program for the Homeless
Date: 6/1/2011 9:00AM - 7/15/2011 5:00PM
For the second consecutive year, the Division of Podiatry at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center will be an official collection center for the “Sox for Socks” program for the homeless. This program is run by the Boston Health Care for the Homeless Program. From June 1st through July 15th, we will be collecting new white athletic socks in adult or child sizes. Collection boxes will be set up at each of our office locations. The Boston Health Care for the Homeless Program services nearly 11,000 homeless men, women and children every year and provides care in over 80 shelter, community and human services sites across Boston.
So why socks? The answer is simple. Access to shoes and socks is often limited for homeless men and women living in shelters and on the streets. As foot physicians, we are acutely aware of the dangers of going barefoot or wearing damp shoes and socks which can lead to conditions such as athlete’s foot, cuts or frostbite in the colder months. The best way to prevent these conditions is to keep feet clean, dry and protected.
We are asking for your participation and support. Please consider donating a package of new white socks and bringing them to your next appointment. Deposit them in the collection box in our office or give them to any of our office staff. In July, along with the Red Sox, we will donate all collected socks to the Boston Health Care for the Homeless program. Last year we collected approximately 100 pairs of socks. This year we have set 150 pairs as our goal. I know with your help we will be able to reach this milestone.
Feel free to discuss this with your doctor. Every pair of new socks can make a difference!
