BIDMC Neurosurgery Clerkship
To perspective clerkship participants,
I would like to welcome you to the neurosurgical service at the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center. We have planned an exciting curriculum that promises to be both exciting and intellectually rewarding.
The clerkship will provide an introductory exposure to neurosurgery. In this rotation, you will expand upon your understanding of the basic physiology of the nervous system and explore critical concepts in the pathophysiology of neurosurgical disorders. Didactic sessions have been developed to familiarize you with current research on aspects of neurosurgical treatment. Your participation in patient care provides a fruitful ground for integrating knowledge of the basic neurosciences, disease pathophysiology, and clinical practices. You will be exposed to both in-patient and out-patient neurosurgical practices. Finally, your experiences in the operating room should facilitate an understanding of the basic neurosurgical techniques and etiquette.
Additionally, the clerkship is designed to offer a sampling of the neurosurgery programs available through the Harvard Medical School. During the clerkship, you will rotate through the famed institutions of the Harvard Medical School including Massachusetts General Hospital, Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, as well as the Brigham and Woman’s Hospital neurosurgery programs.
For many participants of the clerkship, this is an opportunity to explore Boston, a city that holds an unique position in American history. This vibrant city is further renowned for its world-class educational institutions, colorful neighborhoods, and cultural facilities. It is my hope that you will have an opportunity to get to know this wonderful city. As such, the clerkship has no academic activities planned for the weekends.
I look forward to meeting you and working with you in the upcoming month. I hope that your experience here will be a meaningful one.
Once again, welcome.

Sincerely,
Clark C. Chen, M.D., Ph.D.
