SPARC Procedure

A long-time leader in treating all aspects of urologic disease, Beth Israel Deaconess offers the minimally invasive SPARC™ procedure for women diagnosed with stress urinary incontinence.

The SPARC™ urethral support sling effectively treats hypermobility of the bladder neck and urethra (when the bladder and the tubes, which carry urine from the body, drop from their normal positions) and intrinsic sphincter muscle deficiency (when the muscle does not completely close the urethra). Complications from trauma, childbirth, radiation, surgery and menopause can cause female incontinence.

Through an incision in the vagina, surgeons insert a very thin strip—or mesh-like sling similar to those used in hernia repairs—into the urethra. The minimally invasive, 30-minute procedure offers excellent short-term results and is safer and more effective than vaginal tape or other alternative treatment.
