Laparoscopic Splenectomy

A laparoscopic splenectomy is an operation to remove the spleen. The surgery is performed when the spleen is destroying blood cells or platelets or when there is a tumor. Introducing tiny cameras and various instruments through keyhole incisions, surgeons can free the spleen, divide it into small pieces and then place it into a small bag which is removed from the abdominal cavity. Patients who are stable, without any complications, are often discharged on the first postoperative day.
