Endoscopic Full-Thickness Plication

The Co-Directors of Endoscopy at BIDMC developed the newest technology for endoscopic full-thickness plication to treat heartburn. Current studies suggest that this less invasive approach will lead to even faster recovery than laparoscopic fundoplication. Using an endoscopic plication system, tiny camera and instrumentation introduced through the esophagus, physicians can put a stitch below the esophagus to tighten the opening and prevent acid reflux. In addition, Dr. Chuttani and Dr. Pleskow are using the Enteryx polymer injection to strengthen the lower esophageal sphincter (valve) to treat heartburn. The comprehensive Heartburn Center at BIDMC will be implementing other new less invasive technology to treat severe gastroesophageal reflux disease.
