Narrowed Mitral Valve
Mitral valve stenosis means your heart's mitral valve -- the valve in the left side of your heart, between the left atrium and the left ventricle -- is narrowed.
Valve Leaflets Thicken, Stiffen or Fuse Together
This occurs when the leaflets of a valve thicken, stiffen or fuse together. As a result, the valve cannot open fully and blood flow between the left chambers of your heart is blocked.
Too Little Blood and Oxygen Circulated Throughout Body
Blood must flow from the atrium, through the mitral valve, and into the ventricle before being pumped out into the rest of your body.
When mitral valve stenosis occurs, it results in too little blood flow between the two left chambers, and, as a result, too little blood and oxygen being circulated throughout the body.
May Lead to Serious Heart Problems
The condition is treatable. Left untreated, however, it can lead to serious heart problems.
