Signs and Symptoms

Symptoms Develop Slowly

Symptoms of mitral valve regurgitation typically develop slowly. You may have the condition for years, even decades, before experiencing symptoms. Sometimes, the symptoms may come on quickly, however.

Symptoms

Symptoms may include:

• Chronic, progressive fatigue
  
• Shortness of breath
  
• Worsening shortness of breath when you lie down
  
• Atrial fibrillation (mostly in people with long-standing mitral valve regurgitation)
  
• Lightheadedness
  
• Cough, especially at night or when lying down
  
• Swollen feet or ankles
  
• Heart murmur

Complications

Complications of mitral valve regurgitation can include:

• Heart failure
  
• Atrial fibrillation
  
• Endocarditis
  
• Pulmonary hypertension
