Risk Factors

Risk factors that can increase the chances of your developing mitral valve regurgitation include:

  • A history of mitral valve prolapse or mitral valve stenosis, although having either condition doesn’t mean you will develop regurgitation
  • A past heart attack
  • Use of certain medications, including ergotamine for migraines or any number of medications that are no longer on the market, such as Pergolide, for Parkinson’s Disease, or the diet drugs Fenfluramine and Dexfenfluramine
  • Infections such as rheumatic fever
  • Congenital heart disease
  • Aging
