About the Heart
Your heart, an involuntary muscle with four chambers, is located slightly left of center in your chest, behind your breastbone. It powers your circulation system, beating 72 times per minute or 100,000 times a day.
The right side receives blood from the body and pumps it to the lungs; the left side receives blood from the lungs and pumps it to the body. In this way, the heart supplies the body with oxygen and nutrients and carries away waste.
