National Social Work Month

What BIDMC Social Workers Have to Say:

To me, being a social worker means being in a position to help other people.

I never question why I come to work each day. I am privileged to encounter people at a critical time in their care when the support and services I am able to provide can really make a positive difference in outcome for them.

Prior to coming here, I liked the way social workers spoke of their institution, even in tough times. I continue to be grateful for the tenor of respect that resonates throughout BIDMC.

It's amazing being able to see people in distress and pain work through that and get to a place where they feel better and can do more of what matters to them in their lives.

An academic medical center offers great opportunities for learning, teaching, and collaborating with other dedicated team members. Most importantly, I feel honored to work with patients and families who teach me every day about facing chronic illness and other life challenges.

Being a social worker at BIDMC means going the distance for patients and families – remaining dedicated to delivering personalized, high quality, patient centered care in a kind, patient and empathic manner.

Being a social worker means being an advocate, behinds the scenes coach, and empathic support person for patients and families coping with chronic illness.

Being a social worker means being a collaborative team player with interdisciplinary colleagues to help meet patients' needs.

Being a SW means being a teacher and mentor to social work colleagues, students, doctors, and nurses in training throughout the medical center.

Having a director who has encouraged and supported me to pursue research has been an incredible plus, as well as having opportunities to teach and supervise.

Working here is the first time that I have ever experienced such uniform support for social work from the CEO/president on down.

What makes my role unique is helping people access a healthcare system that is so complex and foreign to them, especially in this difficult time in their life.

Social workers have been instrumental during the most troubled and complex cases. They are skilled and have been generous with their knowledge and time, not just with patients but with their colleagues as well.
