Parkinsons Disease

Occupational and physical therapists work closely with specialists affiliated with BIDMC’s Movement Disorders Center to provide comprehensive and specialized care to patients with Parkinson’s disease and other movement disorders.

In addition to Parkinson’s disease, the Movement Disorders Center is a multidisciplinary outpatient unit devoted to diagnosis and treatment of patients with parkinsonian syndromes, tremors, gait disorders, dystonia, spasticity, dyskinesias, tic disorders, chorea and drug-induced movement disorders.

Rehabilitation therapy services include:

  • Exercises for flexibility, strength or endurance
  • Exercises for the breathing muscles
  • Techniques to compensate for faulty movement patterns
  • Gait and balance training
  • Consultation regarding assistive or adaptive devices, and shoe wear
  • Education about changes in home or work environment to improve mobility or safety.
