Multiple Sclerosis

The Multiple Sclerosis and Demyelinating Disorders Clinic provides state-of-the-art diagnostic facilities and care for patients with multiple sclerosis and related demyelinating disorders. The MS Clinic provides care for more than 1,000 patient visits per year, and its members are engaged in research on improving the diagnosis and management of these disorders.

Rehabilitation programs for patients with multiple sclerosis are provided by occupational and physical therapists as part of a multidisciplinary team. Rehabilitation programs have been shown to be effective in reducing fatigue and MS-related symptoms; improving mobility, well being and mood; and maintaining or improving endurance. Rehabilitation is important early in the disease process when changes in lifestyle are easier to adopt; it is equally important following periods of relapse or exacerbation to maintain or improve function.

After an initial consultation, an individual treatment program in developed to address specific impairments. While the frequency or intensity of treatment varies, patients are often seen 1-2 times initially and then every few months until they are able to continue with a program on their own. Treatment programs may include:

  • Specific exercises for coordination, strength, flexibility, balance and endurance
  • Balance and gait training
  • Consultation regarding braces, canes/crutches and adaptive devices
  • Instruction in techniques for energy conservation
  • Techniques to manage pain and spasticity
