While consulting is not a new concept, Interventional Radiology has formalized its consulting service to provide clinicians with all aspects of interventional management. Interventionalists are now available around the clock for consultation, rounds, and scheduling/admissions where appropriate.
How to use the Interventional Consulting Service
- Call the 24-hour Consulting Number 617-754-2847 (in-hospital: 4-2874) for the Consultant for the day.*
- The Consultant will either come to your office (if on campus) to see the patient or discuss the problem and if studies/procedures are needed, will schedule the procedures and follow-up with the results to make a final disposition. We will work with you to coordinate medical/surgical consultations as needed. For example, your patient presents with symptoms suspicious for vascular insufficiency of the lower extremities, i.e, claudication, TIAs or intestinal angina. You consult with Interventional Radiology and we suggest the most appropriate non-invasive imaging study for claudication or TIAs and/or an angiographic study for intestinal angina. Depending on results, we will either perform an interventional procedure or coordinate an operative procedure with medicine/surgery.
- If the patient needs to be admitted for an interventional procedure we will admit the patient through the outpatient Day Care Unit. If full hospitalization is required, we will admit the patient to our own radiology service or to the Hospitalist service at BIDMC, or your own service as you desire.
- We will follow the patient in the hospital and get appropriate medical/surgical consultation as needed. Upon discharge, the patient will remain under your care but we will schedule follow-up visits with the patient regarding interventional procedures that were performed by our service. I will be contacting you shortly. We hope this change in practice will be beneficial to your practice and your patients.
