Communications
The Communications division is comprised of highly trained Public Safety dispatchers who serve one of the most important functions within the department. The dispatchers are responsible for handling all incoming phone calls (including emergency calls), entering calls, dispatching all officers in the field, and monitoring the department's security camera, radio, and door access systems. Several of our Public Safety Officers (Public Safety Officer 2's) are also cross-trained in the dispatching position and fill-in as necessary.
Dispatchers operate from the state of the art dispatch center located in the Public Safety office. Utilizing computer aided dispatch (CAD) software allows dispatchers to easily and quickly enter as well as manage all calls being handled in the field. The dispatchers are able to track and monitor field units and ensure that the appropriate help is dispatched to each and every call. Dispatchers also utilize a modern digital Motorola radio system with both touch screen controls and hands free headsets. The radio system allows dispatchers to quickly reach units on all Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center operated radio channels as well as the Boston Area Police Emergency Radio Network (BAPERN) and MASCO radio network. Dispatchers also have access to the CJIS/NCIC computer system which allows them to check for warrants, criminal records, and Registry of Motor Vehicles records. Monitors in the dispatch center allow the dispatchers to view any of the security cameras in the hospital at any time. This serves as a second set of eyes as they are able to view areas where field units may not currently be located. The door access systems allow the dispatchers to monitor access control throughout the hospital as well as emergency alarms and quickly dispatch the appropriate units in the event an alarm is received.
To contact the dispatch center dial 617-632-9111 from an outside line, or x2-9111 from any on campus telephone.
